When slogan cancels were introduced at the United
Nations, they were available only at the UN Post
Office(UNPO). The UN Post Office is a sub-station of the
Grand Central United States Post Office. It is staffed by US
Postal employees and operates under US postal regulations.
The UNPO uses a dater die in which the month, date, time,
AM, PM and the year designation can be changed (Type A
dater).
UN Postal Administration (UNPA): introduced a solid
one piece dater die for the 1961 "Decade" slogan #8. For
slogans #8 - 15 the UNPA and the UNPO each used their own
die on the FD.
Starting with the 1965 "UNICEF"
slogan #16, both the UNPA and the UNPO used a solid dater
die on the First Day. The UN Post Office used its changeable
dater die on the first "working" day after the philatelic
first day. There are two first days for each UN New York
slogan cancel starting with the "UNICEF" slogan #16. One is
the FD of use by the UNPA and the other is the FD of use by
the Post Office, which actually handles all United Nations
mail, including items postmarked by the
UNPA.
The below listed slogan cancels are on specially
prepared envelopes with special slogan cachet.
